Getting started with a communication cube
A practical introduction for families and educators. FlipMood is a communication aid; individual needs and learning pace vary.
Start with a familiar moment
Choose a relaxed moment and a familiar activity. Show one symbol alongside the related object or action. Allow time to explore, without pressure.
Respond to communication
Acknowledge pointing, gestures and other ways of communicating. The cube can be part of the person’s wider communication system.
Choose suitable messages
Begin with messages that are useful in everyday life. Check that the words, symbols and colours are understandable to the person using them.
Care and safe use
Recommended age: 3+. Check the cube and cards before use; stop using damaged components. Clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid temperatures above 45°C and do not put it in a dishwasher.
Find individual support
There is no fixed timeline or guaranteed result. Ask a qualified speech and language therapist or AAC professional for advice on suitability and use.
